Our Founder
Our founding partner, Theo Mapheto, brings a wealth of experience to the firm. Whilst doing his undergraduate studies Mr. Mapheto played an active role in numerous student and youth organizations and has a string of impressive academic accolades under his belt.
He was the founding member of the Black Management Forum, Student Chapter at his alma mater. In addition, he was an executive member of the University’s Aids Awareness Program. Mr. Mapheto crowned all these achievements by representing his university in the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition.
He is an attorney of the High Court of South Africa, duly admitted as such in the year 2006.
Mr Mapheto has worked as an Investigator for the Public Protector as an Investigator for the Public Protector, a Chapter 9 institution whose mandate is to support constitutional democracy. His responsibilities entailed, inter alia, investigating all manner of complaints against the government and state institutions.
Mr. Mapheto then served as a Researcher at the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the highest court in the country. During his stint at the Constitutional Court, he gained considerable experience in legal research, trial advocacy, human rights work and public interest litigation. This experience has been of tremendous benefit to our firm. Since Mr. Mapheto has a right of appearance in the High Court, some of our High Court work is to be done “in house”. Significantly, this will reduce costs substantially for clients. Even in cases where counsel is appointed, the fact that we have a skilled practitioner will ensure that the work carried out by counsel is narrowed and costs limited.
Mr. Mapheto is an active participant in the affairs of the organized professions and several prominent organizations to ensure that we are kept abreast of the latest developments on the points of law, judgments and topical issues.
He is a member of the Black Lawyers Association, Black Management Forum and the Compliance Institute of South Africa.
He, being a true patriot, has not severed his ties with his alma mater. To this end, he is an executive member of the University of Limpopo, Alumni Association Gauteng Chapter.
Mr. Mapheto has also had a stint with the Competition Commission as an Investigator. In this role he was exposed to the investigation of complex competition law matters in the country. His final stint in the corporate was with Absa bank, where he served as a Legal & Compliance Officer in the bank’s retail division. Amongst his many duties, Mr. Mapheto was responsible for the identification of legal and compliance risks in the business, development of action plans to mitigate risks and the implementation of AMLC in the business.
In our firm we encourage practitioners to plough back and share in the knowledge that they have acquired over the years. In this regard, we are proud to state that our founding partner leads by example as he acts as a tutor and external marker in the UNISA School of law. In addition, Mr. Mapheto contributes to issues shaping national discourse by writing and publishing on topical issues. Some of his letters and articles have been published in such reputable publications as De Rebus, Sunday Times, City Press and The Sowetan.
Over and above our firm, Mr. Mapheto is a founder and director of Davuka Legal Consulting & Projects, a business enterprise specializing in the fields of Business Advisory Services, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Liquor Licensing Procurement, Risk Management, Compliance, Corporate Governance, Project Management as well as Conference Facilitation.
